Concealed Carry

5 Things to Consider for a Concealed Carry Handgun

1) Size is Important!

The best concealed carry gun is the one you will carry everyday.  This means it has to be comfortable, and fit where it will be carried. Generally, if you are carrying a gun IWB (in your waistband), you will want a smaller gun, such as the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield, the Sig Sauer P365, or the Ruger LCP.

If you don’t mind a bigger firearm, or you are carrying your firearm in a purse, then you can check out something larger, such as a Glock 19 or a Sig Sauer P320.

2) Two Cartridges – 9mm & 380 ACP

While there are other, larger options, the king and queen of concealed carry are the 9mm and the 380. Most people will want to carry a 9mm handgun, but if you are sensitive to recoil, or you want the smallest gun you can find, the 380 may be the way to go.  There are options for both cartridges from Smith & Wesson, Glock, and Ruger.

3) Weight Determines How it Feels to Carry, but Has Drawbacks

Most concealed carry firearms are partially metal, and partially polymer (plastic). This means the gun is lighter, and therefore you will not feel it as much while carrying. There is a downside to this – when shooting the gun, you will feel more recoil, and it will be more tough to keep it on target with multiple shots. A heavier gun, such as one made of all metal, will absorb recoil better.

4) Capacity – Single Stack vs Double Stack

Some guns use a magazine with cartridges that are stacked in a single line, where others stagger the cartridges, which increases the capacity at the cost of physical size.  Double-stacked firearms are wider, and so you will feel them in your holster a bit more.

Some believe that capacity is king, but the reality is in the vast majority of defensive firearm uses, only 2 shots are fired. Single stack firearms generally hold 7-10 rounds, where double stacked firearms hold 10-15.

5) Let Your Hand Decide

Everyone has a different hand and finger size. What matters more for accurate use of a firearm is that it “feels right” in your hand. We welcome you to pick up and handle your options in our store, and we will help you find the right gun for you.
